SPECiES

The identification of new species in the interstellar medium (ISM) is intrinsically linked to their prior study in the laboratory, especially at millimeter wavelengths where the recorded spectra act as identity cards of molecules. In the SPECiES (SPEctroscopie Chirped-pulse en Expansion Supersonique pulsée au kHz) project, we are developing a new spectrometer using revolutionary instrumentation, based on the so-called chirped-pulse technique, allowing high-resolution broadband spectroscopy in the millimeter range. In this project, this technique will be coupled with a pulsed supersonic expansion at kHz, almost two orders of magnitude beyond conventional repetition rates, which will allow probing of new reactive species, created for example by electric discharge, in a manner ultra sensitive, in order to then look for them in the ISM.

This project is supported by a public grant from the Laboratoire d’Excellence Physics Atoms Light Mater (LabEx PALM) overseen by the French National Research Agency (ANR) as part of the Investissements d’Avenir program (ANR-10-LABX-0039-PALM).
